Chandigarh: Mohali deputy commissioner Amit Talwar calls for maintenance of memorial at Chappar Chiri

MOHALI: Seven days after TOI highlighted the plight of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Memorial at Chappar Chiri in Mohali, Mohali deputy commissioner (DC) Amit Talwar directed agencies concerned to install street lights and sign boards, besides re-constructing the road around the memorial. The DC also directed the department to illuminate the “Fateh Burj,” the highest tower in the country.

Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) and Rural Development Department were directed to carry out repair works expeditiously and in time. Also, directions were issued to Mohali police as well as the district education department to manage traffic flow on the roads leading to the memorial.

The education department was asked to organise school tours for students of private and government schools.

He also directed the district development and panchayat officer to solve the problem of stray animals near the memorial.

Talwar said, “Various departments have been directed to beautify and improve the exterior and interior appearance of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Memorial, Chappar Chiri related to Sikh history. We have a unique heritage memorial depicting the Sikh history and culture, reminding us of how Banda Bahadur abolished the zimidari system of the Mughals and established prosperous Sikh Missals. We must respect, protect and preserve such heritage sites.”

Talwar assured Fateh Heritage Pvt Ltd, which was looking after the memorial, that GMADA would soon complete work on repair of sign boards, street lights and roads around the memorial. Simultaneously, the district police administration would also control traffic on the roads linking this memorial by continuous patrolling.

To make Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Memorial known at all levels, the deputy commissioner asked the district development and panchayat officer to encourage sarpanches and panches from villages to draw up village programmes.
