CHANDIGARH: With water level reaching the danger mark, one floodgate of Sukhna Lake was opened in the early hours of Sunday.
“We have been keeping an eye on the water level for the past couple of weeks. It reached 1,162.3 feet, the danger mark, forcing us to open a floodgate at 1.15 am. The water passed through Sukhna choe. All precautionary measures were taken. The released water didn’t affect any residential area,” said C B Ojha, chief engineering, UT administration.
All measures were taken so that the water did not cause flood-life situation in adjoining and low-lying areas, officials said. The administration kept informing Mohali and Patiala about the situation from time to time.
The engineering department has constituted teams to monitor the water level of Sukhna. In 2021, the UT had to open Sukhna floodgates three times due to an increase in the water level. Before that, the gates were opened in 2020 and September 2018 due to incessant rain in catchment areas.
