Chance to see one of Newcastle's best views as Grey's Monument tours to open again - how to book

It's one of the greatest views in Newcastle - but it's only available for a few months a year.

Visitors will have a rare chance to get a bird's eye view of the city centre as Grey's Monument opens its doors again this spring.

Newcastle City Guides will lead tours up the column in April, May, June and July - and bookings will open at noon on Monday, March 9.

The tours see groups climb the 164 steps to the top of the city landmark and enjoy unrivalled views over Grainger Town’s magnificently preserved Georgian architecture.

The monument is named after the 2nd Earl Grey, Charles Grey, who hailed from the North East and was British Prime Minister in the 1830s - the famous Earl Grey tea blend was named after him too.

St James’ Park , The Sage, and the Millennium Bridge can all be viewed from the top of the tower, built in 1838.

The immortalised Charles Grey - whose government reformed the House of Commons and abolished slavery - faces towards the River Tyne and he has a fantastic view of Grey Street as it curves its way down to the Quayside.

Tours start at 10am in 30 minute slots with the last tour beginning at 3.30pm. They have a maximum of eight guests per tour.

Tickets are £5, children under five are strictly not admitted and children aged between five and 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

Visitors are warned that at some points the staircase is narrow and dark.

The monument can also be hired for group tours between March and October subject to guide availability.

Grey’s Monument tours started in March 2015 and have proved to be hugely popular with residents and tourists alike. Most events have sold out in advance.
