Championship transfer round-up: Man City youngster set for loan as Hull reject £5m bid

The new English Football League (EFL) season kicked off last weekend.

And as we have now come to expect from all three divisions, there was no shortage of drama or headlines.

Whilst plenty of business has already been done over the summer by clubs, especially in the Championship, it is important to note that the summer transfer window is still open for a few more weeks.

It slams shut on Thursday, September 1 meaning almost a month still remains for the 24 clubs in the second tier to strengthen their squads and also try to hang on to their prized assets.

Here, Mirror Football takes a look at the latest confirmed deals and rumours on August 2.

Blades set to sign another City star

Sheffield United are poised to confirm the signing of another Manchester City player on a season-long loan.

Earlier this summer, the Blades completed the temporary signing of midfielder Tommy Doyle. Now, they are set to add another of Pep Guardiola's youngsters in fellow midfielder James McAtee. Speaking post-match following his side's 1-0 loss away at Watford on Monday night - their Championship opener - Blades manager Paul Heckingbottom was asked on whether McAtee would be his latest addition.

"So I’ve just been told," replied. "I’ve been focused on the game, I was getting ready for this. Some of the players we’re looking at we know well. But I’ve been totally getting ready for Watford. He (McAtee) is a good player. He handles the ball fantastic, that’s why he’s at City.”

Doyle missed the game at Vicarage Road through a thigh-related injury.

Hatters raid Grimsby and Canada

Speaking of players with the surname McAtee being on the move, Luton Town have confirmed the arrival of Grimsby forward John McAtee.

The 23-year-old played a key role in helping the Mariners seal promotion from the National League last term and he will be returning there for the current season on a loan arrangement. Speaking to Luton's website, he said: "I want to get more game time so when I'm back here next year, I'm ready to go."

The Hatters have also confirmed the signing of striker Aribim Pepple from Canadian Premier League side Cavalry FC. The 19-year-old lived in Leicestershire before moving to Canada with his family aged five.

Klopp seal of approval convinced Blackburn boss

Blackburn have once again persuaded Liverpool to send them one of their talented youngsters. Midfielder Tyler Morton follows in the footsteps of Harvey Elliott and Leighton Clarkson in making a temporary move to Ewood Park.

And new boss Jon Dahl Tomasson says the fact Reds' chief Jurgen Klopp gave Morton his Premier League and Champions League debuts last season was enough to convince him to chase the deal.

Speaking about Morton, the Dane said: "He has quality on the ball, he wants the ball and is equally comfortable playing in defensive midfield or central midfield positions. He’s good at reading triggers, he knows when to press and when not to press, he sees the right passes and takes very few touches. He sees the game and is a clever player.

"If a manager like Klopp, an excellent manager who’s one of the best in the world, trusts someone at Tyler’s age, that’s really positive."

Tigers rebuff Championship rivals' bid

What's the best deal done by a Championship club so far this summer? Let us know in the comments!

Hull City have knocked back a £5m bid by Championship rivals Middlesbrough for defender Jacob Greaves.

But Boro chief Chris Wilder is hopeful of bringing in at least one new player ahead of Saturday’s trip to QPR. Wilder revealed after the opening day draw against West Brom that he wants another five recruits.

And while any deal for Greaves now looks dead, Boro are closing in on Fulham striker Rodrigo Muniz. Greaves, 21, has already surpassed a century of appearances across all three divisions of the EFL.
