Champions League standings: Aston Villa beat Bologna to go top in dream start

Aston Villa's dream return to the UEFA Champions League continued after goals from John McGinn and Jhon Duran earned the Premier League side a 2-0 win over Bologna and sent them top of the table on Tuesday (October 22).

Villa last played in the top tier of European football back in 1983 but the club's transformation under Unai Emery knows no bounds as the only side to register three wins from three games of the competition so far.

The atmosphere around Villa Park was a far cry from the giant killing of Bayern Munich three weeks ago in a repeat of Villa's greatest ever night in winning the 1982 European Cup.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid came from behind to beat Borussia Dortmund 5-2 with Vinicius Junior scoring a hat-trick. The win took the 15-time champions into ninth place in the latest standings.

In the latest UEFA Champions League format, that came into being this season, the top eight teams qualify directly for last-16; teams from ninth to 24th enter a play-off round to contest the remaining last-16 berths. Meanwhile the bottom 12 teams will be eliminated.
