'Challenging' pink-ball Tests are not high on our agenda, says MCC chief Guy Lavender

Pink-ball, day-night Test cricket is no longer a high priority for the MCC, with the club’s chief executive, Guy Lavender, admitting the format is “challenging” in the UK.

MCC were among the early proponents of the innovation, which has seen matches held with considerable success in Australia but just one in England (against West Indies at Edgbaston in August, 2017), where the climate and long hours of daylight in summer makes it less appealing.

Instead, the MCC’s focus has shifted, particularly to improving hybrid pitches for white-ball cricket.

“[Day-night Tests are] not high on our agenda at the moment,” Lavender told Standard Sport. “I think it’s challenging in the UK. We have tried it at Edgbaston.

“Part of our role, we think, is to take forward developments for the game and just see what happens. Some will be picked up and will work, others won’t... that’s fine.”

Meanwhile, talkSPORT have secured the radio rights to another high-profile England overseas tour, to India in 2020/21, ahead of BBC Test Match Special. The station covered England’s tour of Sri Lanka and will cover the trip to the Caribbean, starting this month, and South Africa.
