Cesc Fabregas prevented Paul Pogba transfer as details emerge over Man Utd deal

Manchester United's pursuit of Cesc Fabregas reportedly blocked Paul Pobga's return to Old Trafford in 2013.

Pogba, who came through the ranks at United, left the club for free to join Juventus in 2012.

With the Italian giants, he developed into one of the best midfielders in the world and eventually rejoined the Red Devils in an £89million deal in 2016.

But Pogba's career could have panned out far differently if United had signed him just one year after he moved to Turin.

The Red Devils were informed the Frenchman was open to a return in 2013, as Moyes took over from Sir Alex Ferguson, according to The Athletic.

However, the former Everton boss opted instead to try and buy Cesc Fabregas, tabling a £25million bid for the Barcelona star in July.

United failed to land the former Arsenal man and Moyes lasted just 10 months in the United hot seat before being sacked.

Meanwhile, Pogba flourished during three more seasons at Juventus, winning three Serie A and two Coppa Italia titles before eventually joining United.

Since joining the Red Devils, he has won the League Cup and the Europa League and helped guide France to World Cup glory in 2018.

Elsewhere, Fabregas stayed with Barcelona for another season after Moyes' unsuccessful pursuit in 2013 and left for Chelsea a year later.

Fabregas opened up on why he joined the Blues over a host of other suitors, including United, earlier this year.

"Once I decide to leave (Barcelona), Arsenal will have the first option of any other club and I cannot speak to any other club for one week to see if Arsenal want me or not," he told Arsecast.

"Arsene didn’t give an answer, we just had to wait one full week to see if they responded. Definitely this was my first option, in my mind I’m telling everyone I’m going to Arsenal – this is what I want.

"Arsene can see this. I didn’t want to be a beggar, they know the situation, in one week they haven’t said anything, straight away I knew they probably didn’t want me back. They waited the full week without giving me a response.

"After the week I had to take my chance, I had Manchester City, United and then I spoke to Mourinho – which I didn’t think would ever happen.

"To be honest, after I left the room with Mourinho I said, 'that’s it, I don’t need to talk to anyone else, I’m going to Chelsea.' What he told me, the team he wanted to make, what he thought of me, how he wanted me to play, this is what I wanted.

"On top of that it’s London and not Manchester, London was my home."
