Celtic midfielder 'set to make Motherwell switch'

Motherwell are set to pip St Johnstone to the loan signing of Celtic midfielder Liam Shaw.

The 20-year-old, who joined the Hoops in the suffer on a free transfer from Sheffield Wednesday, has made just two first team appearances this season and The Scotsman report that Motherwell have stolen a march on St Johnstone to acquire his services for the second half of this season.

Shaw made his Celtic debut in a 3-2 win over Real Betis in the UEFA Europa League last month, while his sole Premiership appearance so far came in a 0-0 draw with St Mirren on December 22.

And he could now be Motherwell boss Graham Alexander's first signing of this window, as the Fir Park side look to strengthen their squad for the return to Premiership action on January 17 away to Ross County. The top flight is currently on its winter break.

The Steelmen have already signed Irish defender Ross Tierney after his capture was announced in December last year and yesterday the club announced young midfielder Barry Maguire has signed a contract extension, keeping him at Fir Park until 2024.
