Celtic loanee Jota reckons Benfica switch was 'meant to be' after scarf swap with Hoops fans

Celtic new boy Jota reckons he was destined to join the Hoops after a fan encounter in his younger days.

The 22-year-old winger, on loan from Portuguese behemoths Benfica, revealed he swapped scarves with a trio of Celtic supporters following a Champions League clash between the sides in his youth.

Jota - born in 1999 - thinks he was about 11 years old when the encounter in question occurred, which would likely place it at Benfica's 2-1 group stage win in 2012, although they also met five years prior.

Either way, the moment stuck with the attacker and he retold it to Celtic fan media on Tuesday.

"There's a really good story about the game against Benfica in Lisbon," he said.

"I was in the stands watching that game and at the end there was three Celtic fans who were walking with me.

"I was very young, like 11 years old. They asked me if I wanted to change scarves.

"You guys have the green and white and we had the red and white. They said 'do you want to switch up?', and I said yes.

"I still have the scarf at home. Coincidence or no? I think the story was meant to be.

"Right now I am a Celtic player and I think it was a good thing in the past."

Jota could make his Hoops debut against Ross County on Saturday after joining Ange Postecoglou's Parkhead rebuild on transfer deadline day.

The Celts have the option to make the Portuguese wide man's season-long loan a permanent deal next year after assessing how he copes with the rigours of the Scottish Premiership.
