Celtic linked with Canada World Cup star as Ange Postecolgou 'weighs up' January transfer

Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou has been linked with a move for Canada World Cup star Alistair Johnston, according to a report.

The right-sided defender - who was in action last night for his country against Belgium - only moved to the MLS with CF Montreal last year. However, the Hoops are believed to be keen admirers of the stopper and are now weighing up a transfer bid ahead of the January transfer window say the Scottish Sun.

The Scottish champions have already moved to strengthen their ranks ahead of the winter window opening after securing highly-rated J-League defender Yuki Kobayashi. The 22-year-old will officially be able to play competitively for the Hoops from January but will hook up with his new team NEXT week after penning a five-year deal at Parkhead. Postecoglou has expressed his desire to bring in at least a couple of new faces next month and with one already in the bag - Johnston could be the next arrival.

The long-term future of Josip Juranovic remains up in the air even though he is contracted long-term. It is claimed that the Hoops will consider offers for the Croatia international - also out in Qatar - when he returns from international duty. Manchester United, Chelsea and Atletico Madrid have all been linked previously with the full-back.

It's unknown what sort of transfer fee would be required to land Johnston but he joined Montreal on a two-year deal with the option of two further seasons. Old club Nashville are also reported to be due a guaranteed 10 per cent of any sales over £800,000 state the same report.

Speaking about his plans for January, the Celtic gaffer said: "I’ll watch it. It’s one of those events you get engrossed in when it comes around. There are always great stories and we’ve got a few participants in there.

"There might be a couple of others I’m looking at as well. It’s fair to say there’s a couple lined up.

"It’s how we’ve done things and how I believe we need to be. It’s how I’m built. I don’t like rushing around last minute. It’s not always the case. Matt O’Riley we did in three days last year.

"We saw an opportunity and moved really quickly. We need to be agile when we need to and when we don’t, we can methodically plan to make sure we get things done.

"If we can get guys early, once January 1 hits they are already part of this football club."
