Celtic hero Scott Brown pinpoints Fleetwood 'extremely disciplined' factor in stunning Derby win

Scott Brown insists his Fleetwood side's 'extremely disciplined' performance against high-flying Derby was exceptional.

The Celtic hero has experienced highs and lows so far in his first full stint as a manager, but seems to have a good rhythm going with the Cods. Fleetwood went to promotion hopefuls Derby County and produced a stunning 2-0 win despite being nearly 20 points behind Paul Warne's men in the English League one.

It was, however, Fleetwood's first win in five games but Brown insists the 96-minute performance from his squad will have caused many to sit up and take notice. The former Hoops captain was also quick to praise goalscorer and former Aberdeen man Jayden Stockley who produced a top finish to open the scoring despite the goal officially being recorded as an own goal.

He said: “The performance today was helped by the pitch, it’s a great stadium to come and play at as a lot of the pitches are more rough and ready at this point, but I thought the lads were extremely well disciplined in terms of the shape behind the ball and the fact they weren’t too eager to chase down.

“The lad’s willingness to do that for 96 minutes was great to see because I thought, overall, the performance was very good. We were calm, the back three were solid, and we didn’t really let them have too many shots at our goal – we put our bodies on the line when we needed to.

“We managed to deal with their attackers on the park as they’ve got a fantastic squad and bench so for them to bring on all their players and our lads to deal with the pressure was brilliant. They also showed their quality in driving forward as well so it was great to watch.”

He added: “The goals we scored were brilliant; Jayden [Stockley]’s was exceptional and then Carlos [Mendes Gomes] wins his one-on-one as well. We always knew we were going to be under the cosh in the second half, but when the ball was there, we were calm and collected.

“It’s great for Jayden to get a goal, but for us, his overall play was exceptional, and his willingness and desire to put people under pressure was great. We know what Jayden is, he’s physical and has great technique as you’ve seen there and he’s a brilliant player to have in the dressing room."
