Celtic fired Europa League qualification transfer warning as 'big sale' predicted ahead of deadline

Steven Naismith insists Celtic could be forced to sell one of their top players if they suffer a shock Europa League exit on Thursday night.

Neil Lennon insists that none of his stars will go before Monday's deadline and also claimed that such an event wouldn't have an effect on his budget for bringing anyone in the door.

But Naismith feels that history shows Celtic would get rid of one of their players to make up for the money that won't be coming in from European competition.

They crashed out of the Champions League in a shock defeat to Ferencvaros and defeat to Sarajevo would be unthinkable for the club.

Odsonne Edouard, Kristoffer Ajer and Olivier Ntcham are among the players all being linked with moves before the deadline and Naismith reckons there is a possibility at least one could go.

In the last two summer windows, Moussa Dembele and Kieran Tierney have been sold for big money when the Champions League group stage wasn't reached and Hearts captain Naismith reckons there's a pattern.

When asked about the future of the players, he told BBC Sportsound: "They’ve been signed with a view point of come, develop and move them on eventually.

"If Celtic don’t qualify then there will be one or two players out of the door.

"The club have shown that in the past when they’ve not made the Champions League they’ve sold players.

"With the game tomorrow night, Edouard hasn’t been firing on all cylinders recently, the injury at the weekend to Ajer, Ajeti’s out, Forrest out.

"Edouard will play, but he’s not been firing on all cylinders."

Earlier in the day, Lennon had claimed: "Basically we want the week to end as quickly as possible. We want to keep all the players.

"If we can add one, great, if we can't I'm still very happy with the bunch of players we've got.

"They will get better now things will settle down, there will be a lot more focus on our season after that.

"The club are quite strong on that we want to keep all our assets and that will be the case regardless of the result."
