Celtic fans debate Ivan Toney transfer miss as Arsenal linked with Brentford star

Ivan Toney is a debate that continues to rumble on between Celtic supporters as he stars for Brentford.

The striker has shown incredible form for the English Championship leaders notching 23 goals so far this season.

Celtic were linked with the former Peterborough man in the summer as Posh chairman Barry Fry insisted Toney's preference was to make the switch to Parkhead.

The Hoops had a £5million bid turned down before they eventually signed Albian Ajeti from West Ham.

And some supporters are rueing the club's decision not to cough up the cash for the talisman as he attracts interest from Arsenal.

@CairneyMarc said: "It gets more and more clear we missed out on a genuine class act doesn’t it."

@NathanMcGinley7 tweeted: "I think about this guy on a regular basis."

@Spoony86 added: "Toney and John McGinn, two top players that wanted the move to Celtic but we tried to be too greedy. Can't blame the majority of the support wanting a massive change at the club when you see scenarios like this time and time again."

But some supporters have pointed out Celtic were right not to pay over the odds, especially with Odsonne Edouard staying put.

They feel it's unrealistic to compare Toney's form in England's second-tier with how he would perform in the Premiership had he made the move up north.

@TonyBhoy said: "No one wanted him. Almost every tweet or forum post I saw thought he was too expensive and that they would rather keep Edouard. He wouldn’t have made a difference to this season anyway."

@jack97_ added: "Wasn’t this deal based on Edouard leaving?"

@Paddy7_ tweeted: "It's conveniently ignored that the Championship is a poor level and that many of our fans were and still are happy with Ajeti."
