Celtic captain Callum McGregor signs new five-year contract

Celtic have announced that captain Callum McGregor has signed a new five-year deal with the club.

The 28-year-old had another two years remaining on his original contract but has reinforced his commitment to the club by staying on until 2026.

The Scottish international made his Celtic debut aged 21, scoring in a 2014 Champions League qualifier at KR Reykjavik.

He has gone on to make 37 appearances for his country scoring his first goal in 2020 against Croatia.

The skipper has won six league titles, four Scottish Cups and four League Cups in 338 first-team games, scoring 54 goals.

Speaking to Celtic TV, McGregor said: "The club is very close to my heart. I've been here for a number of years now, I'm happy here, I love my football and representing this club, and I want to stay here for as long as I can.

"This is a new chapter and I'm desperate to see the five years out and if I've done that, then that means it's been a pretty successful time again."

Next up for Celtic is a Premiership clash with Dundee United on Sunday and with pressure mounting on Hoops boss Ange Postecoglou, he will want to silence his critics with a win.
