Celtic and Rangers could get 'guaranteed' Champions League access as influential figures rail against key reform

Influential European Football Club Association figures reportedly want clubs such as Celtic and Rangers to be afforded greater status in a revamped Champions League.

UEFA are said to be braced for immense pressure to scrap a new process by which clubs can qualify for the tournament based on their recent coefficient history.

It's claimed the rule would simply ensure elite clubs who fail to qualify through their domestic competitions would be given a backdoor route into the tournament.

There's growing pushback against the 12 who facilitated the already failed European Super League amid suspicion they could be the sides who benefit from it.

According to The Times, one ECA board member claimed there's strong feeling within the organisation that domestic champions from nations such as Scotland and the Netherlands should be "guaranteed" access.

Scotland's coefficient bounce in recent seasons has all-but ensured an automatic spot in the group stage from 2022/23 but a power shift away from the whims of Europe's 'big five' leagues - England, Spain, France, Germany and Italy - could be a positive signal long-term.

The Champions League is set to take on a new format from 2024 which involves the end of the traditional group stage format.

Instead, 36 teams will be placed into a single league within which each side will play 10 others.

The top eight will qualify automatically for the last 16 while the remaining places will be allocated following play-offs between clubs who finish 9th to 24th.

Intriguingly, however, UEFA have signalled the format is not set in stone which may well be fuelling opposition to the controversial qualification changes.

Celtic and Rangers will both be involved in qualifying for next season's tournament after that improved coefficient yielded a second place in the preliminary rounds.
