Celebs gather at National Wax Museum for unveiling of newest waxwork

The newest waxwork at the National Wax Museum was launched last night to honour drag queen Mr Pussy (Alan Amsby).

The veteran star confronted homophobia in Ireland with big hair and feather boas in the early 1970s.

Celebrities gathered at the museum last night to honour the London native with former RTE newsreader Anne Doyle helping with the big reveal.

Paddy Dunning said it was the museum's honour to unveil the Mr Pussy wax figure.

He said: "He has entertained us. He has given us a laugh. He is a brilliant human being. He's a great man. He's a great woman.

"He is a star. He is our star. We all love him. This is one of the nights of his life to cherish. He will be immortalised here in the wax museum."

Anne Doyle paid tribute to her friend of many years before the real Mr Pussy sauntered into the room to the delight of the crowd.

Anne said: "It has been a joy and an honour to be asked to be here this evening. He is all the clichés, the icon, the star.

"I've had the good fortune of knowing Alan for many years, well not so many years.

"When he came to Ireland, he is one person that changed Ireland. None of the many scenes and changes and events that we have experienced in Ireland would have happened without Alan Amsby.

"He didn't just do it. He does it with a brilliant talent, a wicked wit and a very, very big, generous heart.

"What Alan brought to Ireland was a great deal more than being a fabulous entertainer. He helped us to stop taking ourselves so seriously. He started something wonderful but what is more important is- he never stopped."

Other celebs attending the event were Alan Hughes, Karl Broderick, Rory O'Neill and Rory Cowan.
