Celebs back £200k PPE fundraiser for Scots NHS workers on frontline of coronavirus pandemic

Scots stars have lent their support to a fundraiser that is seeking to help supply personal protective equipment (PPE) to those on the frontline of the coronavirus fight.

The Masks For Scotland campaign is aiming to raise £200,000 which will be used to supply 12,000 masks and 12,000 gowns for Scots NHS workers.

More than £44,000 has been raised so far after it was given backing from some of the biggest Scottish names in film and TV.

PPE procured from the fundraiser will be developed by a ‘reputable supplier’ that creates the equipment fit for the needs of NHS staff and offers the highest level of protection.

Brian Cox, Alan Cumming and Joanna Vanderham are among those to back appeal, which has raised just over 20 per cent of its goal of £200,000 so far.

Each of the actors have released videos encouraging people to donate to the fundraiser.

“There is not enough PPE in Scotland, with medics being shamed or bullied into working without the correct equipment”, said Succession actor Brian Cox in his video appeal.

“We’re already seeing NHS workers dying from coronavirus. We need every single member of the medical professions to stay fit and healthy so you can.”

“A donation of £15 will buy a gown and a mask, while £100 can protect six medical staff a day.

“No donation is too small”

Joanna Vanderham was among the famous names to release a video in support of the fundraiser (UGC)

A description on the fundraiser reads: “Medical staff are facing coronavirus without adequate PPE. Let’s get them the protection they deserve.

“We are a dedicated fundraiser bringing PPE to those working in the frontline of the community in Scotland during this fight against coronavirus.

“The Government is increasing the supply of PPE and this campaign exists, not in competition with the Government, but in support and will help to increase the amount of PPE reaching the frontline here in Scotland.

“We really need your help to buy PPE for our medical teams. Your donation will save lives. Not just those of the medical staff but of their families and patients they treat."

All of the money raised for the campaign will go directly to getting the necessary PPE to frontline NHS staff in Scotland.
