Carl Starfelt in Celtic transfer blow with Champions League deadline looming

Celtic's quest to sign Carl Starfelt has taken a twist as the defender returned to training with Rubin Kazan.

The club had reportedly agreed a deal to sign the 26-year-old however talks have not progressed in the last couple of days

Celtic's need of defensive improvements is one which the club actively need to press on with after it was reported that Kristoffer Ajer is set to join Premier League side Brentford in a £13.5million deal.

That leaves just Stephen Welsh and Osaze Urhoghide in the running ahead of the crucial clash with Midtjylland.

Kazan have a friendly against fellow Russian side FC Sochi this weekend and Starfelt has been training with his teammates ahead of that fixture.

The clock is ticking though for Celtic to register players ahead of their crucial Champions League Qualifiers in the coming days.

The qualifiers will be the first test for Ange Postecoglou and his team and with the match coming so early in the seasons calendar it would be imperative for Celtic to have improvements in defence ready for the match.

The signing of Starfelt would provide defensive options for Starfelt in what is in reality for Celtic the most important part of the season.

In recent days they have already added Liel Abada and Kyogo Furuhashi.
