Carl Frampton departs for Dubai and defining bout against ex-US Marine Jamel Herring

Carl Frampton has flown out for his date with destiny as he bids to become the first ever fighter from these shores to win world titles in three weight divisions.

The 'Jackal' departed for Dubai from Dublin Airport this morning alongside fellow Belfast man and strength and conditioning coach Michael Lyons.

The super featherweight fight was originally set for Saturday, February 27 at the Copper Box Arena in London, but a minor hand injury forced Frampton to withdraw with Caesars Bluewaters Dubai the new venue on April 3.

Despite the setback for the Northern Ireland star, bookies have Frampton a slight favourite for the world title shot against Jamel Herring at 8/13.

American Herring served two tours of Iraq in the Marines during his amateur boxing days. He qualified for the London Olympic Games in 2012 but was beaten in the first round.

Afterwards, Herring left the US Marine Corps and turned professional and has fought 21 times on his way to winning the world title, losing only twice.

At 5ft 10in tall, Herring is a big super-featherweight and has already defended his belt twice but Frampton is a big step up on class on those challengers.
