WEST ALTON, Mo. _ Two men in a stolen vehicle sped through a red light Tuesday, T-boned a second car and then carjacked a good Samaritan who stopped to help, threatening to kill him, police say.
The men had offered several witnesses money to help them flee the scene of the crash shortly before noon in the intersection of Highway 67 and Highway 94, St. Charles County police said.
The suspects were speeding on Highway 67 in a stolen Toyota Avalon when the driver ran a red light and slammed into a Chrysler 300 in the intersection, police said. One of the two occupants of the Chrysler was later taken to a hospital for treatment, but police did not know the victim's condition Tuesday night.
As several motorists stopped to offer help, the driver of the stolen Toyota got out and offered several of them money to help him and his accomplice flee the scene, police said. The two suspects then confronted one driver and threatened to kill him if he didn't hand over his truck, a gray 2016 Dodge Ram pickup.
The suspects fled south on Highway 67 toward St. Louis County, police said. The truck was later found near Highway 367 and Parker Road, about six miles south of the crash site.
Police released surveillance images of the suspects Tuesday evening, describing them as black men in their 20s.
One of the suspects is nearly 6 feet tall with a light build and short hair and was last seen wearing a black baseball hat with a star on it and a gray long-sleeved shirt, police said.
The second suspect is 5 feet 6 inches tall with medium build, dark complexion and short hair, last seen wearing a blue nylon track suit and a fanny pack. He appeared to have been injured in the crash and was walking with a limp while holding his head, police said.
