Cardinals S Josh Shaw suspended for betting on NFL games

The NFL announced Friday that Arizona Cardinals safety Josh Shaw has been suspended for at least all of next season. It was discovered he bet on NFL games.

Shaw has not played this season,  as he suffered a shoulder injury in the preseason and was placed on injured reserve before the season began. He was signed this past offseason by the Cardinals, having worked with defensive coordinator Vance Joseph previously.

According to the press release, Shaw did not use any inside information and no game was compromised. There was no evidence that anyone in the organization knew of it or was involved.

“The continued success of the NFL depends directly on each of us doing everything necessary to safeguard the integrity of the game and the reputations of all who participate in the league.  At the core of this responsibility is the longstanding principle that betting on NFL games, or on any element of a game, puts at risk the integrity of the game, damages public confidence in the NFL, and is forbidden under all circumstances.”  said Commissioner Goodell in the announcement.  “If you work in the NFL in any capacity, you may not bet on NFL football.”

Shaw may appeal thile suspension and, as of now, may apply for reinstatement in February 2021.
