Arizona Cardinals fans who have followed the team over more than the last decade know the history the team has at quarterbacks. There have been a few good ones but it has mostly been quite forgettable.
How does their QB play historically compare to the rest of the league?
ESPN’s Doug Clawson ranked the quarterback play of all 32 NFL teams during the Super Bowl era. The Cardinals were the fourth-worst team at No. 29, ahead of only the Cleveland Browns, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Chicago Bears.
Kurt Warner is named the best quarterback they have had. Carson Palmer’s production was a little higher but Warner led the team to the Super Bowl.
Neil Lomax is not mentioned and deserves it. He was a Pro Bowler twice and led the league in passing in 1987.
As for the worst, the article cites Matt Leinart. He definitely wasn’t the worst, although he should be noted as the greatest disappointment. He wasn’t bad. He just wasn’t good.
Cardinals fans have weathered starting quarterbacks like Tom Tupa, Stan Gelbaugh, John Navarre, Max Hall and Ryan Lindley.
With Kyler Murray now the signal caller, hopefully the problems of the past are solved. The Cardinals have not had a quarterback as the entrenched starter for more than five and a half seasons since Lomax.
The present and future look good at the position. The past? Cardinals fans know it’s mostly bad.
