Cardinals needed D.J. Humphries’ redone contract to stay under salary cap

The Arizona Cardinals reworked left tackle D.J. Humphries’ contract to create extra salary cap space for this year. The move freed up more than $7 million in cap space.

They needed the cap space.

On Monday, SI.com’s Albert Breer shared the 10 teams with the least amount of cap space. The Cardinals have the seventh-least amount of cap space, with just more than $6.5 million available.

While when the Cardinals redid Humphries’ contract, many believed it was to be able to extend a player’s contract like receiver DeAndre Hopkins.

It turns out that had they not restructured the deal, they would have been over the cap.

With $6.51 million in cap space as the season begins, the Cardinals are not in a position to do much without making other moves.
