Cardinals draft Alabama S Deionte Thompson in 5th round

The Arizona Cardinals have thus far alternated draft picks on offense and defense. That continued with their fifth-round pick. Using the first pick of the fifth round, they selected Alabama safety Deointe Thompson.

The underclassman played 14 games for the Crimson Tide in 2018, picking up 78 tackles, two interceptions, four forced fumbles and six pass breakups.

He is 6-1 and 195 pounds. Because of a wrist injury, he was unable to participate in drills at the NFL combine.

He joins a group of safeties that includes Budda Baker and D.J. Swearinger.

He was a highly-touted recruit out of high school but did not start until his junior year. He will likely begin his career on the same trajectory. Special teams will be his place as a rookie like it was early in his college career.
