Cardinals capsized again as Reds rally for 4-2 victory

CINCINNATI _ Those errors caught up with the Cardinals.

In a familiar twist and turn of events, the Cardinals took that early lead, made some mistakes that kept them from adding on to that early lead, and then watched as their opponent rallied for a win. This time it was the Cincinnati Reds. Though it looked a lot like what happened against the Cubs and happened against the Dodgers.

The Reds scored four runs in the seventh inning to reverse the Cardinals' lead and eventually take a 4-2 victory Monday at Great American Ball Park.

Eugenio Suarez had a line drive to deep center field that center fielder Dexter Fowler appeared to have a beat on. The ball went in and out of his glove, allowing two runs to score to tie the game, 2-2. Two more runs would score on Scooter Gennett's double off lefty reliever Kevin Siegrist.

All four runs were charged to Cardinals starter Carlos Martinez.

He had faced the minimum through six innings, though he pitched with little margin for error.

In the fifth inning, Paul DeJong was waved around third despite the left fielder already having the ball. DeJong was thrown out easily at the plate, unplugging what could have been a key rally.

Had DeJong merely stayed at third base, the Cardinals would have had the bases loaded, one out, and Matt Carpenter coming up.

In the sixth inning, Stephen Piscotty rumbled around second and again tested Adam Duvall's arm. Piscotty failed to get to third and another rally went poof.

The Cardinals got their lead on back-to-back doubles in the fifth inning. Yadier Molina opened the inning with a double, and Tommy Pham swapped places with him for an RBI double. Martinez helped himself with a bunt single that brought Pham home on the safety squeeze.

Moments later Dexter Fowler singled, third-base coach Chris Maloney waved, and DeJong was out at home.
