Cardiff v Scarlets kick-off time, TV channel, live stream info and team news for Boxing Day derby

There have been mass postponements across all sports in the UK over the festive period but one Welsh rugby match still stands, and that's Cardiff v Scarlets.

It is the only Welsh rugby derby going ahead on Boxing Day, with Ospreys v Dragons having been postponed.

The derby is being staged behind closed doors due to new Welsh Government Covid regulations coming in from December 26.

As well as the fans, Scarlets boss Dwayne Peel will be another one who misses the derby due to testing positive for Covid. He has been taking part in meetings via video calls, and his assistant Dai Flanagan will take charge for the trip to Cardiff.

Here's all the information you need for the United Rugby Championship fixture:

What has been said?

Cardiff captain Josh Turnbull: “We spoke as a playing group about how well the boys have done over the last two weeks.

“They’ve turned a few heads and it’s pricked a few consciences.

“The young boys and the Premiership players stepping in has really put Cardiff Rugby in good light.

“But that will mean nothing if the boys coming back in against the Scarlets don’t back it up.

“They’re in a similar position, and haven’t played for eight weeks, and had to do a similar quarantine.

“The game last week was called off so they probably haven’t got the buzz around training like we have at the moment.

“It’s the one game I look forward to every year, it’s the one that really gets me buzzing. I enjoy raising intensity levels and ripping into them.

“It’s disappointing that we can’t have crowds but obviously health comes first.

“These games are massive for all clubs and you want to play them in front of full crowds.

The biggest disappointment is that we’re unable to reschedule these fixtures and play derbies in front of big crowds.”

Scarlets head coach Dwayne Peel: “They’ve got a couple of Scarlets – Kirby [Myhill], [Rhys] Priestland, Josh [Turnbull] as well, Will Boyde, Josh Adams – so I’m sure they’ll be up for it to play against us.

"We will be likewise. It’s been disappointing having four cancelled games. We felt we were in a good spot before November. The boys will definitely be up for it.

"I’d imagine both sides will be a bit rusty to start, that’s the reality of it, but it’s getting into it and having some games and competitive fixtures.

“The reality is these games are ones you look forward to as a player. I’ve been there as a player myself and the derbies around Christmas are always a special time for anyone.

"Not to have crowds is obviously frustrating. From a club’s perspective, it’s been voiced this week the damage in terms of financial rewards that [not having a crowd for] those games bring.

"There’s a lot at play in these games. From a playing perspective, we want to have crowds. I read something Lee Blackett at Wasps said about how much higher the intensity is with a sell-out crowd.

"We’re used to it, we played a season without crowds. It’s not ideal for anyone. Unfortunately, it is what it is.

"The big thing for us is that we prep well and, from a mental side, we’re switched on because they’re big games in the context of our season and qualification for Europe. There’s a lot riding on these games.”
