Cardiff City transfer news as West Brom keep tabs on Bluebirds star, manager candidate grilled over job and boss on shortlist

Here are your Cardiff City headlines for Wednesday, January 25.

West Brom boss holds talks with Kipre

West Brom boss Carlos Corberan has held talks with Bluebirds defender Cedric Kipre over his progress in the Welsh capital.

Cardiff signed the defender on a season-long loan, with the Baggies not insisting on a mid-season recall clause. Music to Cardiff's ears, because he has been largely solid all season and is a nailed-on first choice at the back.

Kipre was not deemed part of Steve Bruce's plans, but, of course, there is a new manager at The Hawthorns in the form of Corberan and the centre-back's future at West Brom might change as a result. The same goes for midfielder Alex Mowatt, who penned a loan deal with Middlesbrough at the start of the season.

Speaking about the duo, according to our sister title BirminghamLive, the Baggies boss said: "I had the discussion with the players who are on loan.

"For me it's important for them to know that I'm following them. I'm watching whether they're playing, or not playing, and a summary of the actions they do.

"It's important for me to analyse every player we have in the club. I usually spend a lot of time with the academy coaches talking about the growing of our young players. I spend time with Chris Brunt, who is in charge of the loans, to see what he's seeing because I like to have a look at the players. I had a previous conversation with them to let them know that I am following them."

Sam Allardyce grilled over Bluebirds job

Sam Allardyce has ruled himself out of the running to take over at Cardiff City.

Allardyce had overtaken Neil Warnock over the last few days to become the bookies' hot favourite to take the job in the capital, having been out of work since leaving West Bromwich Albion in the summer of 2021.

However, he insists he has not received any contact from the Bluebirds over the vacancy.

Quizzed on the speculation on the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast, he said: "I keep getting these calls. I'm not going to Cardiff and I haven't been approached by Cardiff to even have a conversation with them.

"So, for the first time and everyone can listen to this and put that right - no, I'm not going down to Wales and I'm staying here in the north-west."

Dean Smith emerges as boss candidate

Former Aston Villa and Norwich City manager Dean Smith is one of a number of candidates being considered for the vacant post at Cardiff City.

We learned this week that ex-Nottingham Forest manager Sabri Lamouchi and former West Brom boss Valerien Ismael were on the club's shortlist and it now understood Smith is also among those names.

Quite how many people the club have whittled this so-called shortlist down to is as yet unknown. However, Smith, 51, is understood to be one of the many names Cardiff are considering as they plan what they deem to be the right way forward.

Smith has been out of work since he left his post at Norwich back in December. He recently went to America to visit his son, Jamie, who plays for Greenville Triumph in the USL League One. However he returned to the UK earlier this week.

Pundit claims City wouldn't be in relegation scrap under Morison

Former West Brom, Sunderland and Wolves striker Don Goodman has given his view on the current crisis Cardiff are facing.

The ex-player turned EFL pundit and commentator believes the club would be in a far better situation if Steve Morison remained at the helm.

“Ultimately, I look at Cardiff and since Neil Warnock left, you have to look at some of the decisions they’ve made,” said Goodman, via OLBG. “They wanted to carry on from Warnock’s style which is why they hired Neil Harris.

“When that didn’t work they went with Mick McCarthy, which was brilliant at the start before turning a little stale and sour.

“Then they went down the road of Steve Morison and allowed him to change the style of play, be a bit more possession-based and bring in lots of players. But they weren’t patient with that really and it did surprise me.

“I think if you’re going to change your style and bring in lots of new players into the football club, then you have to be patient and give a manager time.

“I don’t think if Cardiff City had left Steve Morison in charge, that they’d be in this relegation battle as much as they are now.”

The predicted Championship table

It's supercomputer time! (Yes, we hate that phrase, too).

Bettingexpert's BETSiE ran it's algorithm to predict how the 2022/23 Championship season will finish.

The 'supercomputer' simulated the remainder of the 2022/23 EFL Championship season 100,000 times, taking into account all match results from the season played so far, projecting the remainder of the season based on both pre-season expectations and xG earned both for and against.

In good news for Bluebirds fans, BETSiE has tipped Cardiff to finish 20th with a projected points total of 51. Their projected record is: W 12.4, D 13.7, L 19.9.

It is projected only a 4.5 points difference will separate them and Wigan Athletic, who are tipped to finish 22nd. Cardiff City's relegation probability is at 25.40%.

Rivals Bristol City are projected to finish 18th, with a points total of around 55.8 - 4.8 more than the projected total for the Bluebirds.
