Cardiff City target Leeds United striker ahead of potential January transfer

Cardiff City are leading the race to sign Leeds United youngster Sam Greenwood on loan in the January transfer window.

The Whites signed Greenwood from Arsenal in the summer and he has been in fine form for the Under-23s.

The 18-year-old is yet to make his debut for the Leeds first team but has been training with the senior group at times this campaign.

Greenwood has already netted six goals for Mark Jackson's team this term which has raised questions as to whether he's ready for senior football, at Elland Road or potentially elsewhere.

Our sister title, Wales Online, report that Cardiff have made tentative enquiries about taking Greenwood on loan for the remainder of the campaign as their injury problems grow.

First-choice striker Kieffer Moore is out with a hamstring problem until the New Year, whilst Isaac Vassell and Lee Tomlin remain long-term absentees.

There is plenty of competition for his signature, though, with Bournemouth and Sheffield Wednesday among the many other names keen to sign the youngster.

Marcelo Bielsa has studied Greenwood's game carefully and spoke about his development last week after he featured in a deeper midfield role, having played up front for the entire season previously.

"His main position is as a centre forward. Normally he plays in conjunction with [Joe] Gelhardt in the team," said the Leeds head coach.

"Gelhardt is a player that when he is close to the box is very dangerous and Greenwood is a player who has a lot of capacity to arrive into the free spaces.

"They can play either with Gelhardt in front and Greenwood behind or the other way round."
