Cardiff City news as Mark Hudson takes first training session and ex-Bluebird reveals sympathy for Steve Morison

Here are your Cardiff City headlines for Thursday, September 22.

Mark Hudson and Tom Ramasut take first session

The Mark Hudson era started in earnest today as the interim manager and his assistant, Tom Ramasut, took their first training session since Steve Morison's exit.

The club announced Morison was relieved from his post as first-team boss on Sunday, with the players all having been afforded some respite due to the international break. Others, of course, were called up for international action.

And this lunchtime was the first time Hudson took charge of training as he and his deputies, including goalkeeping coach Graham Stack, bid to turn City's form around following the conclusion of the international break.

All players, barring those with their national teams, were asked to report back to the Bluebirds' Vale of Glamorgan training base this morning.

Hudson will be given a chance to stake his claim for the job on a permanent basis, similar to Steve Morison last year after the sacking of Mick McCarthy.

Oli Denham out of Wales action due to injury

Bluebirds defender Oliver Denham has had to withdraw from Wales under-21s' camp due to injury, the FAW have confirmed.

The FAW tweeted that Denham would be replaced by Stoke City's Dan Malone and Fulham defender Jay Williams.

Denham has played just one senior match this season, a 90-minute appearance in the 3-0 defeat by Portsmouth in the Carabao Cup.

In other news, Rubin Colwill has not been included in Rob Page's 23-man squad to face Belgium tonight. Jordan James, Rabbi Matondo and Wes Burns are the other three to miss out on the Nations League clash.

Mark Harris, however, has been named in the squad for the clash with the Belgians.

The match kicks off at 7.45pm. You can follow live coverage on our football page here .

McAnuff: I have sympathy for Morison, what's he supposed to do?

Former Bluebirds midfielder and respected pundit Jobi McAnuff feels sympathy for Steve Morison and believes he wasn't given the time to fully implement his strategy or philosophy on this new-look squad.

Morison was entrusted to bring in 17 new players this summer and while the style of play changed drastically, they found scoring goals rather difficult.

Even so, it's been far from a disastrous start and McAnuff, who played almost 50 times for Cardiff, believes it's rare to find a club which affords managers enough time to get it right.

When asked on this week's EFL podcast whether managers are becoming fall guys who are too easy to sack, he said: "Absolutely. It comes back to the earlier point about getting back into it. These two examples (Morison and Danny Schofield at Huddersfield Town) are why I don't (want to go into management) at this moment in time.

"That is the big factor for me, when I look at Cardiff City and Steve Morison... in the last match, nine of the starting XI were new signings. That says it all. It takes time for players to gel and managers to get their ideas across.

"Goalscoring has been an issue, certainly, for Cardiff, but for me, that big a turnover, I don't know what you're supposed to do?

"The club's angle will be that they have backed him in the market and were expecting better results than they've got. But there is a process to these things. And, unfortunately, no manager is afforded the time to really implement that style and philosophy anymore.

"It's almost like you have to win games instantly or you'll be judged as a failure, which is obviously what's happened there. I've got a lot of sympathy for Steve Morison, I've got to be honest.

Ex-Bluebirds duo take first managerial jobs

Ex-Cardiff City duo Jamie Ward and Ben Turner have been given the top jobs at non-League side Ilkeston Town FC.

Ward enjoyed a loan spell on loan with the Bluebirds in 2018, the year they won promotion, while Ben Turner played 121 times for the Welsh capital city club, including a season in the Premier League.

Ward has been interim manager since the start of the month and now it has been confirmed that Turner will be his assistant at the Southern League Premier Division Central side.

The chairman of the Derbyshire outfit, David Hilton, said: “I cannot praise Jamie and Ben enough as they have had a really positive impact on the squad. They are the right people to take us forward”
