Cardiff City legend and Wales World Cup star Colin Baker dies

True Cardiff City icon Colin Baker has passed away at the age of 86.

Baker was a Bluebirds stalwart throughout the 1950s and 1960s, representing the club 328 times over a 13-year spell at Ninian Park.

The former wing-half also represented Wales on seven occasions, including the 1958 World Cup in Sweden - the only time Wales have ever reached the tournament's finals - and made his debut in the match against Mexico.

Cardiff-born Baker won the promotion to the First Division back in 1960 and also claimed the Welsh Cup four times during his time playing for his hometown club.

He joined the Bluebirds in 1953 as an amateur while completing his National Service in the Royal Air Force and would go on to become widely regarded as one of the best wide players the club has ever produced.

Another sidenote to jot down in the club's history book is that in 1965 he became the first Cardiff player ever to be substituted, when he was replaced by David Summerhayes in a match against Bury following an injury.

After retiring from the game in 1966, he continued his involvement with Cardiff City and ran the club's lottery alongside his former Bluebirds team-mate Derek Tapscott.

He sadly passed away on Sunday following a long battle with dementia.

"The thoughts of all of us at the club are with Colin's friends and family at this terribly difficult time," the club wrote in a statement.

"Forever a Bluebird, may he rest in peace."
