Cardiff City have issued a brief statement to thank supporters for their well wishes after news emerged Peter Whittingham is fighting for his life in hospital.
South Wales Police today confirmed Whittingham, 35, is in hospital and while they were unable to comment further, WalesOnline understands he is in critical condition.
Supporters, football clubs and organisations have come forward en masse to offer their support to Whittingham and his family.
"We’d like to thank the football community for their messages in support of Peter and his family," the club said.
"All of our thoughts are with them, as we ask for their privacy to be respected at this time."
The English Football League also said: "The thoughts of everyone at the EFL are with CardiffCity legend Peter Whittingham. We'd like to wish him a speedy and full recovery."
A police statement on Wednesday confirmed an incident had taken place in Barry, near Whittingham's home in Penarth.
"At around 10pm on March 7, South Wales Police were called to a licensed premises in Barry," the statement read.
"A 35-year-old man from Penarth suffered a head injury as a result of a fall and remains at the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff.
"At this stage there is no evidence or suggestion of a criminal act, and it appears the injury was caused by an accidental fall.
"Enquiries are continuing into the circumstances of the incident."
It has been suggested Whittingham had been out to watch the England vs Wales Six Nations match.
Whittingham is widely regarded as one of the finest players ever to play for the Bluebirds, having enjoyed a hugely successful 10-year spell in the Welsh capital.
He played more than 450 times for Cardiff between 2007 and 2017, scoring 96 goals in the process.
He also turned out for Aston Villa, Burnley, Derby County and Blackburn Rovers in a career which spanned 15 years, eventually retiring in 2018.
