Carabao Cup second round draw ball numbers as Everton, Leeds and Newcastle discover fate

The draw for the second round of this year's Carabao Cup takes place on Wednesday night.

And there will be a distinct lack of Championship sides in the hat, with a clutch of second tier sides coming a cropper on Tuesday's first round ties. No fewer than 11 were dumped out - nine of these by lower opposition.

The second round sees the 35 first round winners joined by 13 Premier League sides and two Championship teams - Burnley and Watford - who received byes. The 25 winners of the second round matches will be joined in the next phase by holders Liverpool and the six other top flight teams involved in European competition.

Among the shocks on Tuesday night was League Two Stevenage humbling Reading thanks to a 2-1 win in Berkshire.

Speaking after watching Danny Rose pinch a late winner, boss Steve Evans said: "We’re not going to win the Carabao but what we can do is make dreams for the people of Stevenage. We’re in the hat and could be drawn away at a League Two club and go out which will make [Reading] partly irrelevant.

"But equally we could draw a Premier League club and then whole town gets excited, especially if it is at home. It doesn’t matter whether you are a Stevenage fan or you support the best club in the world, which is Glasgow Celtic. Even those that support a London club, they’ll turn up on a Tuesday night, under the lights, won't they?"

The draw takes place after tonight's clash between Sheffield Wednesday and Sunderland. The Hillsborough tie is one of six taking place on Wednesday night with the all-Championship meeting between West Brom and Sheffield United concluding the first round on Thursday night.

The second round draw will remain regionalised and ties are scheduled to take place the week commencing August 22.
