Car hit by Metro at Callerton Parkway level crossing for second time in just two months

Metro services between Kingston Park and Newcastle Airport ground to a halt on Thursday morning when a car was hit by a Metro at a level crossing.

For the second time since April, a vehicle was struck at the barrier-less crossing just after 10am, though no-one was injured. After several hours of recovery work, the car and the train involved were both removed by around 1.30pm.

Northumbria Police and Metro operator Nexus were assisted by Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service in making the area safe following the incident, and an investigation into what happened has now begun. Metro service has resumed.

A Nexus spokesperson said this was a "reminder" for drivers to take care and obey the warning lights at the level crossing. A previous incident in April also saw a car hit at the same spot - though again, no-one was seriously hurt. The incident also saw extensive delays on the roads - with Callerton Lane closed in both directions.

The spokesperson said: "Metro services have resumed between Kingston Park and Airport following the earlier incident at the Callerton Parkway level crossing where a car was involved in a collision with one of our trains.

"The car has been removed from the scene and the Metro tracks inspected. We now have the green light to resume operations in the affected area. Our thanks to our colleagues in the emergency services in responding to this morning’s incident. Nobody has been injured.

"However, it serves as a reminder to drivers to ensure that when they are approaching a Metro level crossing they take due care and attention, and to stop when the lights are on red."

A Northumbria Police spokesperson added: "Shortly before 10.30am today, we received a report of a road traffic collision on Callerton Lane in Newcastle. It was reported that a vehicle collided with a Metro train while on a level crossing. No-one is believed to have been injured in the incident."

A Tyne and Wear Fire Service spokesperson added that five crews had been dispatched to the scene and that "the main focus for our crews was to make the scene of the collision safe and assist with helping passengers from the train".
