Car fire covers Leeds shopping street in black smog as blaze completely destroys vehicle

Fumes of black smog covered a main road with a parade of shops in Leeds after a car caught fire and was utterly decimated by the flames.

North Lane in Headingley was covered in smoke as the flames danced from the small car at 10am today (April 19). Firefighters rushed to the scene and extinguished the pungent fire by 10.37am.

Footage was shared with LeedsLive showed the billowing spectacle outside Chinese takeaway Sakura, as the smog covered neighbouring shops Natural Food Store and Pizza Hut, and emergency sirens could be heard approaching.

There were no injuries and no one had to be rescued from the small silver vehicle which appeared utterly decimated by the flames with the top half of the car completely eaten away by the fire.

A West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We were called at 09.59 to reports of a small vehicle on fire on North Lane in Headingley.

"One crew from Leeds attended and had left the scene by 10.37. No one was rescued and there is no report of any injuries."
