Woman's car deliberately torched in firebug attack on Scots street

A reckless firebug torched a woman’s car outside her Linwood home.

Cops on patrol in Blackwood Avenue spotted the motor ablaze around 11.25pm on Tuesday and alerted fire crews.

After the flames had been put out, it was discovered the 27-year-old’s car had been deliberately set alight.

The vehicle was completely destroyed by the blaze and a second vehicle parked nearby was also left with scorch marks.

Cops have now launched a probe into the incident (Andrew Neil)

A full investigation is now underway, with cops checking CCTV in the area as well as carrying out door to door enquires.

Specialist forensic officers will also scour the wreckage of the car for clues.

Inspector Tracy Harkins, deputy area commander, said members of the public could hold the key in identifying the mindless louts behind the fire attack.

She said: “Police officers were patrolling in the area when they observed a car on fire and alerted the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.

“It has been established that the fire was started deliberately and a full investigation is now underway to establish who was responsible for this reckless and dangerous act.

“Setting fire to a vehicle can be incredibly dangerous, particularly in a residential area like this.”

She added: “If you saw anything suspicious in the area around the time of the incident then we would like to hear from you.

“If you have private space CCTV in the area, please contact police.

“Similarly, if you were driving in the area, we’d ask that you review any dashcam footage to see if you captured anything which may be useful to our investigation.

“Did you see a vehicle in the street or people hanging around before or after? If so, we would urge you to come forward.”

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 11.23pm on Tuesday, April 6, to reports of a car on fire at Blackwood Avenue, Linwood.

“Operations control immediately mobilised two appliances to the scene and firefighters extinguished the fire.

“No casualties were involved and the crew left the scene after ensuring the area was made safe.”
