Car crashes and bursts into flames on busy road leaving wreckage at bus stop

Pictures show the wreckage left behind after a car crashed into a bus stop and burst into flames in south Manchester.

The incident happened at around 7.30am this morning (Friday) on Errwood Road. Fire crews and police officers were called to reports of a vehicle on fire after a crash.

The road was cordoned off in both directions. According to traffic alert service, it was shut between Clare Road and Crossley Road.

The Manchester Evening News understands that a car crashed into a bus stop on the busy road. It then burst into flames.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said no injuries had been reported. Firefighters extinguished the blaze and were on the scene for around 40 minutes.

Pictures taken at the scene show the bus stop left completely wrecked after the incident. The bus stop sign was knocked to the ground, while glass from the shelter was left strewn across the pavement.

The shelter itself has also been left badly damaged. The road has since been fully reopened again.

A spokesperson for the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: "Just before 8am this morning (Friday 6th January), one fire engine form Withington fire station was called to reports of a road traffic collision involving one vehicle on Errwood Road, Manchester.”

"The crew arrived quickly at scene and worked to make the area safe. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used a hose reel to extinguish the vehicle fire.”

"Firefighters were in attendance for around forty minutes."
