Car bursts into flames on Edinburgh City Bypass as cops race to scene

Emergency services raced to a busy Scots road after a motor became engulfed in flames.

Fire crews rushed to a report of a car on fire at Sheriffhall on the Edinburgh City Bypass at 1.13pm on Sunday, December 12.

Two fire engines were called to the scene as cops also attended to divert traffic, reports Edinburgh Live.

Dramatic pictures show smoke pouring from the inferno after the motor became engulfed in flames on Sunday afternoon.

The road was shut down westbound and one lane travelling eastbound was also closed while the incident was cleared.

It is not known if anyone was injured.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Police were called to assist the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service with the closure of a lane on the A720 eastbound at around 1:15pm on Sunday December 12.”

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Spokesperson said: “We were alerted to a report of a car on fire at 1.13 pm on Sunday 12 December at Sherriff Hall on the Edinburgh City By-Pass.

"Two appliances were immediately mobilised to the location and the fire was extinguished. Crews have now left the scene.”
