Canoeist Green firms for individual Paris Olympic berth

Olympic gold medallist Tom Green is perfectly placed for a crack at an individual berth at the Paris Games after victory in the K1 1000 final in Sydney.

Green's triumph at the Canoe Sprint Grand Prix 2 and Oceania Championships on Sunday gifts him front-running for selection for the K1 1000 at the Paris Olympics.

On Saturday, Green clinched the K2 500 Oceania title with Jean van der Westhuyzen - the duo won Olympic gold in that event at the Tokyo Games of 2021.

Green backed up on Sunday to win the K1 1000, finishing ahead of Denmark's canoe marathon world champion Mads Pedersen and South Australian Maguire Reid.

Australia's canoe selectors will ratify Olympic selections after the canoe sprint national championships on March 7-10 in Sydney.

But Green, who finished seventh in the K1 1000 in Tokyo, is now in pole position after winning Sunday's final in three minutes 31.96 seconds.

"Coming out with the win, it's good to do a good time and put out a solid race," Green said.

"We came here to win and get the spots for the Olympics - happy with how the K2 went, as well as the K1."

Also Sunday, Quenslander Ben Manning provisionally secured Australia an Olympic quota slot by winning the C1 1000 final.

While the quota spot must yet be ratified by international hierarchy, Manning has taken an important step towards making his Olympic debut in Paris.

"It definitely means a lot," Manning said.

"It's what all the hard work was for, building up to this time and securing the quota spot that I unfortunately couldn't get overseas last year.

"To get it here and to know now that one step of the job is done, and on to the next one it feels really good."
