NHS Tayside has dramatically improved its cancer waiting times to become the best performing mainland health board over the summer.
Latest figures show the health board has exceeded the national 95 per cent target in June and July.
During those months, 96.6 per cent of patients received treatment within 62 days of their referral and 98 per cent of patients were treated within 31 days of their cancer diagnosis.
At a recent board meeting it was revealed NHS Tayside had previously ranked 13th in Scotland in terms of making cancer waiting time targets.
Back in March, it emerged only one Scottish health board - NHS Lanarkshire - met the 95 per cent target set by the Scottish Government for the 62-day target between October and December 2018.
At the time health secretary Jeane Freeman MSP said she had “been clear with health boards that cancer patients must continue to be prioritised.”
NHS Tayside says the improved figures for cancer waiting times are part of “an improving picture for performance across the board.”
Chief executive Grant Archibald said: “Improving waiting times for the people of Tayside is a board priority and our clinical teams have been leading the redesign of patient pathways with a focus on ensuring patients can be seen more quickly.
“I am very pleased to see that our plans are now starting to deliver for the people of Tayside.
“Our frontline staff are working really hard to keep improving services and we will be supporting them to make sure we can keep making a difference to patients and their families across Tayside.”
