Canberrans to get a 10 minute grace period on parking fines

Canberrans will get a 10 minute grace period for ticket pay parking in ACT government-owned parking areas.

Police Minister Mick Gentleman said it would apply for sessions of one hour or more.

However he was not able to provide details on when the change would come into effect.

"Access Canberra parking inspectors will be notified and trained on the changes once they are implemented," he said in a letter to Speaker Joy Burch.

"During the current public health emergency, Access Canberra is focusing on parking compliance around pedestrian crossings, illegal parking which may cause line of sight safety issues, disability parking bays and no stopping and loading zones.

"There is a reduced enforcement focus on nonpayment of parking fees and overstays of time limits, in effect providing increased grace to motorists parking during this period."

It came after Labor backbencher Michael Pettersson in February moved a motion in the Legislative Assembly to explore implementing a grace period to vehicles that had paid for an hour or more of parking.

At the time, the opposition said any feasibility studies would be unnecessary and costly, calling on the government to get on with it.
