Can you see your mum on Mother's Day under England's lockdown rules?

Many people are asking the same thing as the weekend approaches - can I see my Mum on Mother's Day under coronavirus lockdown rules in England?

The answer is - it depends.

If, for example, you are in an existing support bubble with your mum (if she lives alone) then you will be able to see her.

However, if you are not, then it is more complicated.

Under lockdown rules, all but non-essential journeys are still banned and the 'stay at home' advice remains, unless you are going out for permitted reasons or are facing exceptional circumstances.

This means that there is no socialising indoors, or family gatherings permitted for Mother's Day.

Although there was some easing from Monday March 8, it just means that two people can meet outside for a coffee or picnic while sitting on a park bench.

So, if your mum lives nearby, then this is a possibility.

You can't hug or kiss your Mum, however, as social distancing restrictions still apply.

The weather's looking a bit iffy on Sunday, too, for outdoor meetings, with rain forecast for Greater Manchester.

Indoor gatherings with people outside your own household are not allowed under the current rules.

And pubs and restaurants are shut, anyway, so it will be impossible to gather for family celebrations in this way.

If your mum is living in a care home, she will be allowed one regular visitor with whom she can hold hands - although a negative Covid-19 test must be obtained beforehand.

And if you are not the one regular visitor - you sadly will not be allowed to visit.

Even if your mum has had a vaccine dose - it is not worth the £200 fine you could potentially face for breaching lockdown rules.

If all else fails, there's always a virtual meeting via a family Zoom call - or a phone call if you want to catch up with your Mum.
