Camper vans park up on Weston-super-Mare Beach lawns despite plea to stay away

Parking along Weston-super-Mare seafront may be closed off – but this evidently hasn’t stopped some visitors arriving.

A number of camper vans parked up on the Beach Lawns this morning.

The Beach Lawns is owned by North Somerset Council.

Parking on the green space is not allowed.

The arrival of the camper vans comes at the same time as North Somerset is urging people to stay away.

Despite the plea, the resort has been busy over the past few weeks in the good weather due to the easement of Government restrictions allowing people to travel to take exercise.

This is despite most of Weston remaining closed due to the Government lockdown restrictions.

There have been reports of a packed seafront and beach with queues forming at takeaways by people in search of refreshment as temperatures soar into the mid-twenties.

Their arrival comes at the same time as Weston Hospital has temporarily closed it’s A&E department and has stopped all new admissions after a number of patients and staff were diagnosed with coronavirus.

Local residents fear that an influx of visitors – with some driving from Birmingham for a day out on the beach – will lead to a second wave of the infection locally.

In the past travellers have set up makeshift camps on the Beach Lawns, leaving a trail of mess behind them.
