Camilla's cheeky joke as she meets actress who plays her in The Crown

The Duchess of Cornwall came face-to-face with the actress who plays her in hit Netflix show The Crown - and joked she could finish her speech for her.

Camilla met actress and filmmaker Emerald Fennell at the Women of the World Festival event at Clarence House today, which was held to mark International Women's Day.

The two women, who had never met before today, were pictured being introduced to each other and chatting during the reception.

And later during a speech, Camilla joked to guests that her "fictional alter ego" Emerald could finish her speech if she were to "fall off her perch".

She said: "It is reassuring to know that, if I should fall off my perch at any moment, my fictional alter ego is here to take over – so, Emerald, be prepared!"

Emerald plays a young Camilla Parker Bowles in the third and fourth seasons of The Crown.

In the fourth season, she is seen in a love triangle with Princess Diana, played by Emma Corrin, and Prince Charles, portrayed by Josh O'Connor, which reportedly led to the Duchess of Cornwall being subjected to online abuse.

Emerald said about their encounter today: “It was absolutely delightful. She is such an impressive person, it was fittingly nice to meet her today on International Women’s Day because she does so much for so many particularly female-centred charities.

“I was nervous I might be thrown in the tower but so far so good.”

“She’s been in the spotlight for a long time and has always weathered it with a lot of grace and good humour.”

When asked about the conversation she had with Camilla, Emerald remained tight-lipped and replied with a smile: “You know what – I’m going to be very discreet, because if I’ve learnt anything it’s ‘loose lips sink ships’.

In recent years, The Crown has proved controversial with its historical accuracy called into question.

However, Prince Harry confessed earlier last year he has watched the show - and says it is more accurate than people think.

Season Five of The Crown is set to be released later this year and the new episodes will focus on the royals during the 1990s - one of their most turbulent times in recent history.

The early 90s saw the breakdown of the marriages of Charles and Diana as well as Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson.

There was also a devastating fire at Windsor Castle in 1992, which the Queen dubbed her "annus horribilis".

Later in the decade, Diana gave her famous BBC Panorama interview, where she talked about Charles's relationship with Camilla Parker Bowles before her untimely death in 1997.

Season five of the show will see wholesale changes to The Crown cast with the role of the Queen falling to BAFTA winner Imelda Staunton, who takes over from Olivia Colman.

The Two Popes star Johnathan Pryce will portray Prince Philip and is taking over from Tobias Menzies.

Meanwhile, Emerald is making way for actress Olivia Williams, who will portray Camilla.
