Cambuslang woman helps Breast Cancer Care with afternoon tea

A kind-hearted Cambuslang woman has thanked the town’s residents for helping raise over £1000 for a good cause - and paying tribute to her mum at the same time.

Nancy Murray last week held a coffee morning and afternoon tea at Clydeford Sheltered Housing on Allison Street, to earn funds for the Breast Cancer Care charity.

They had been a massive help to Nancy when her mother, also called Nancy, was diagnosed with the disease.

Sadly Nancy’s mum passed away just over 12 months after her diagnosis, aged 83, four years ago.

However, she was touched by the care and help provided by the charity, and this year decided she wanted to give something back.

Originally she expected around 30 people would attend the event, and was stunned when over double that popped in for a cuppa, some cake and a chat.

Nancy explained: “They were so good with advice and support when my mum was diagnosed.

“They are a fantastic charity, both for the person diagnosed and for their family, and I thought an afternoon tea was something I could do - it’s the sort of thing my mum would have liked, too.

“I thought there would be about 30 folk coming by at first, but realised the numbers were going up the week beforehand - I was totally blown away by the amount of people there on the day.”

Numerous shops in Cambuslang helped out, donating items for raffles, while other stores chipped in with food and drink, and Cambuslang Parish Church provided chairs.

And a total of £1,218 was raised.

Nancy added: “Nearly every shop we asked in Cambuslang has helped out.

“For raffle prizes we had a hamper, vouchers for Blacks the butchers, a set meal for the Lucky Oriental, items from Pandora’s Box and lots of other things.

“Karen Branigan from A Wafer, A Cone, Ya Nugget donated cakes that would have kept the whole of Cambuslang going - they were great.

“I was totally over the moon with how it went. Everyone was saying they knew someone who had been affected by cancer, and wanted to help.

“And it was nice to let people stop by for a chat too.”
