Billy Campbell joked Cambuslang Rangers will award Tony Stevenson their player of the month award at every opportunity this season after he picked up the prize on Saturday – then bagged the winner against Port Glasgow.
Camby co-gaffers Campbell and Paul McColl presented the midfielder with the gong ahead of kick-off and Stevenson popped up for the only goal of the game on the half-hour mark to get the club back to winning ways after a 2-0 defeat to Gartcairn in midweek.
It put them back to the top of West of Scotland League Conference B on goal difference from Ardeer Thistle, who have played two games more.
And Campbell said: “We awarded Tony the player of the month trophy prior to the game because he’s been outstanding.
“We are thinking of giving him an award every week now if that is going to help!
“We wanted to make sure he was getting recognition from the management team and he’s been a 9 or a 10 for us in every game we’ve played, so there’s no doubt he thoroughly deserves it.
“His vision, his link-up play, his control on the ball - he has everything.
“He’s got a lot of experience as well, but he’s really stood up.
“Everybody is working hard. There’s no panic or criticism around the players.
“Tony shows that in his midfield role, with the younger boys around him, and he’s really turned up for us.
“If we are up against it, he doesn’t hide and he’s got a wee reward with the goal on Saturday.
“And I don’t think there was a bad player across the whole team on Saturday.”
