Cambuslang Harriers pair hailed as "unsung heroes" pick up top athletics awards

A pair of dedicated volunteers are celebrating after picking up a top prize at the Scottish Athletics awards recently.

Cambuslang Harriers duo Fiona Pollock and Pamela Stephen were announced as winners of the Scottish Athletics Volunteer of the Year Award at a glittering ceremony in the Glasgow Hilton Hotel earlier this month, as the best of the country’s track and field stars, coaches and club staff gathered to celebrate the achievements of the past year.

The night culminated with Laura Muir being named 4J Athlete of the Year, and Owen Miller as 4J Para Athlete of the Year.

And Fiona and Pamela were joined them on the list of prize winners for their sterling work with the club amid the pandemic, helping the club engage with the local community.

The pair pipped Ian Gebbie (Kilmarnock Harriers) and Duncan McKellar (Garscube Harriers) to the prize after they were also shortlisted.

Cambuslang Harriers president Des Dickson heaped praise on the club's "unsung heroes" and added: "Pamela and Fiona are very deserving of this award and everyone at the club is over the moon for them.

"Both have, over the last twenty years and more, worked together to support and maintain our juniors.

"Every week, no matter the weather, they are there on a Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and at the weekends to support training, attend events and over the last year the club time trials we organised and those by Scottish Athletics due to Covid.

"They certainly do not seek the limelight and are what we call our ‘unsung heroes’.

"We could not operate without them.

"On behalf of the hundreds of junior athletes they have supported over many years, and for the way they have kept things going during the last 18 months of the lockdown, their work has been truly remarkable."
