Cam Newton out vs. Cardinals; Kyle Allen to start at QB

After speculation for most of the week and Carolina Panthers coach Ron Rivera walking out on a press conference after incessant questions about, the status of quarterback Cam Newton is known. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Newton has officially been ruled out from the Panthers’ Week 3 road contest against the Arizona Cardinals.

That means Kyle Allen will get the start for the Panthers.

Newton has missed practice with a foot injury. It was reaggravated in the Panthers’ 20-14 Week 2 loss. He originally suffered the injury in the preseason.

Newton had not yet thrown a touchdown pass in two games and had only rushed for minus-two yards.

Allen is an Arizona native, having played prep football at Desert Mountain High School.

He will make his second career start. He started once in 2018 against the New Orleans Saints, leading the Panthers to a 33-14 victory. He was 16-of-27 passing for 228 yards and two touchdowns. He was not picked off. He also rushed five times for 19 yards and scored a touchdown.

The Panthers (0-2) and the Cardinals (0-1-1) kick off at 1:05 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
