Calvin Harris accused of having 'out-of-control ego' in plagiarism battle with iconic DJ

Calvin Harris has been accused of having an “out-of-control ego” by a DJ with whom he is locked in a bitter plagiarism battle.

DJ Chicane — real name Nicholas Bracegirdle c claimed Blessings, a new track released by Harris, 41, is “almost identical” to his 1996 classic, Offshore.

He shared a video on TikTok showing how a riff in Offshore — which spent eight weeks in the charts — sounded similar to Blessings.

Chicane, 54, wrote: “This is my right to reply to all the comments online about the new Calvin Harris single Blessings' similarity to my 30-year old Offshore.

“It's really hard to decipher when one comes in and one goes, that is because they are almost identical. I am defending my copyright and intellectual property here guys — I'd like to know what your comments are here guys.”

In response, Harris — who is expecting a baby with radio presenter Vick Hope — denied copying the track and filmed a video comparing the two tracks.

In the clip, he laughed and called Chicane “stupid”, adding: “He thinks he invented... it’s not the same! It’s genuinely not the same!”

He captioned the video: “Response to the people who have enjoyed calling me a plagiarist over the last couple of days, cheers Nick Chicane all the best to you pal.”

Harris’ clip prompted a TikTok user to message Chicane, writing: “Calvin Harris’ reply video convinced me even more that he has copied. Chicane is the guy and the disrespect from Calvin is crazy.”

Chicane replied: “The disrespect was off the chart, guy is struggling with an out of control ego… Kinda sad & hilarious to watch him ruin his career.”

The Standard has contacted Harris’ representatives for comment.

The copyright battle comes as Harris prepares for parenthood with his wife Vick Hope who he married in 2023.

Hope, 35, confirmed she is pregnant on her Radio 1 show last week, telling listeners she was about to go on maternity leave next week.

During a conversation with her co-host Jamie Laing, she said: “I should probably also say this is my final week before I go on maternity leave.”

Laing replied: “You're an amazing friend, an amazing person, and you're just going to be an amazing mum.”

Hope had previously been photographed with a baby bump at awards shows, but had avoided confirming the baby news.
