California moves its 2020 presidential primary up to March

SACRAMENTO, Calif. _ Backing an effort for California to claim a bigger share of the attention from presidential candidates, Gov. Jerry Brown has signed a bill moving the state's primary elections to early March.

Brown's decision to sign the bill, announced without fanfare Wednesday, means the state will hold its presidential primary on March 3, 2020.

"We need to have greater influence at the national level," said Democratic state Sen. Ricardo Lara of Bell Gardens, the author of the bill to move the primary away from its scheduled date in June.
