Calais Campbell penalized for hit on Deshaun Watson, and NFL fans were in disbelief

On Deshaun Watson’s 1-yard scramble in the third quarter of the Texans’ game against the Jaguars on Sunday morning, defensive Calais Campbell was credited with a tackle and an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.

Neither attribution was particularly accurate.

Campbell basically whiffed on his tackle attempt of Watson, which was why NFL fans were furious when Campbell got flagged for leading with his helmet. If anyone led with their helmet, it was Waston, who ducked and stuck his head out to brace from contact with Campbell. The play helped the Texans get their drive off to a good start. It finished with a field goal.

With NFL officiating having a tough season, NFL fans and media members didn’t hesitate to lay into the officials in the matchup.

The officials can’t get any relief from the criticism. Considering the amazing amounts of technology and money accessible to then NFL, the league seems to be leaving these referees ill-equipped to make sound decisions. But even using what they have, the officials seem to be putting together a particularly tough season.
